Kenya no longer issues traditional visas, but all visitors (except East African Community citizens) must apply in advance for an Electronic Travel Authorisation, or eTA, through the official portal at etakenya.go.ke. It's a straightforward online application requiring a passport photo and your travel details, and it should ideally be submitted at least three days before departure. Your passport must be valid for at least six months, and depending on your travel history a yellow fever certificate may be required. Best time to visit Kenya
Kenya is a superb year-round destination, but the dry seasons, June to October and January to February, offer the best game viewing, when wildlife concentrates around water and the famous Great Migration crossings unfold in the Masai Mara from roughly July to October. These are the peak months. The long rains (March to May) bring lush green landscapes, the lowest prices and superb birding, though some roads turn muddy, while the short rains (November to December) are lighter, with refreshed plains and quieter camps. Choose July to October for the migration, January to February for calving and value, or the green months for solitude and photography.

Yes. Kenya has a long-established, professional tourism industry, and its major safari destinations, including the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and the Rift Valley, are well managed and regularly patrolled, making them very safe for visitors. As with any international trip, we advise normal common-sense precautions in cities like Nairobi and Mombasa, such as keeping valuables secure. Out in the parks and conservancies you'll be accompanied by experienced guides who prioritise your safety, and we carefully select trusted camps, lodges and routes throughout your journey.
The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). US dollars are widely accepted for major expenses such as park fees, lodges and organised tours, though notes should be recent (series 2013 or later) and in good condition. For everyday spending, tips and local markets, Kenyan shillings are best, and mobile money (M-Pesa) is used almost everywhere. Credit and debit cards are accepted at larger hotels, lodges and restaurants, but it's wise to carry some cash when travelling in remote areas. Check a live exchange rate before you travel at xe.com.
Pack light, comfortable clothing in neutral tones like khaki, tan and olive, which suit the bush and don't attract insects. Bring layers, as mornings and evenings on game drives can be surprisingly cool while midday is warm, so a fleece or light jacket alongside short-sleeved shirts works well. Long sleeves and trousers help protect against sun and mosquitoes in the evening. Essentials include a wide-brimmed sun hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a good camera with a zoom lens and spare batteries. Comfortable closed shoes are ideal, and if you're adding a beach or highland extension, pack accordingly. Don't forget any personal medication, including anti-malarial tablets.
The Great Migration reaches Kenya's Masai Mara between roughly July and October, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra cross north from Tanzania's Serengeti in search of fresh grazing. The star attraction is the dramatic Mara River crossing, where the herds mass on the banks before plunging through crocodile-filled waters, an unforgettable spectacle usually at its peak in August and September. Crossings are unpredictable by nature, so patience is key, and staying two or more nights in the Mara greatly improves your chances. Absolutely, Kenya is one of the finest Big Five destinations in Africa. The Masai Mara offers exceptional sightings of lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, and is one of the best places on earth for big cats. For rhino, Lake Nakuru and Ol Pejeta Conservancy are outstanding, with Ol Pejeta home to the last two northern white rhinos in existence and a thriving black rhino population. Amboseli, meanwhile, is legendary for its huge elephant herds set against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Combining two or three parks gives you an excellent chance of seeing all five.
