Big Five: Rwanda offers a genuine Big Five experience at Akagera National Park, where lions and rhinos (both black and white) were successfully reintroduced to join resident elephants, buffalo and leopards, a remarkable conservation comeback story.
Specialities: Rwanda's headline is its primates. Volcanoes National Park shelters around a third of the world's mountain gorillas, plus the endemic golden monkey, while Nyungwe protects chimpanzees and enormous troops of Ruwenzori colobus, up to 400 strong.
Birdlife: Over 700 species countrywide, including around 30 Albertine Rift endemics found almost nowhere else. Nyungwe alone holds some 300 species, and Akagera's wetlands are among the best places in Rwanda to search for the rare shoebill.
Other notes: Akagera's Lake Ihema teems with hippos and crocodiles, best explored by boat. With gorillas, chimps, golden monkeys, the Big Five and top birding packed into one small, easily navigated country, Rwanda delivers exceptional variety in a short, low-impact trip.
